How to Clean Mold on a Ceiling Safely and Effectively
Mold on a ceiling is more than just an unpleasant stain. It is often a warning sign that excess moisture is present in your home. Whether caused by poor ventilation, condensation, or a hidden leak, mold should be addressed as soon as possible before it spreads further. Small patches of surface mold can often be cleaned safely at home, but it is equally important to identify and eliminate the source of the moisture. Without solving the underlying problem, mold will almost certainly return.
The method below uses undiluted white vinegar, which has natural acidic properties that can help remove light surface mold on painted ceilings and other non-porous surfaces. However, if the mold covers a large area, keeps coming back, or has penetrated deeply into drywall or insulation, professional remediation may be necessary.

White distilled vinegar (undiluted)
Clean spray bottle
Microfiber cloths
Soft sponge

Step 1: Prepare the Area
Proper preparation makes the cleaning process safer and more effective.
Open all nearby windows and doors to improve air circulation. If your bathroom has an exhaust fan, switch it on before starting. Good ventilation helps reduce your exposure to mold spores and prevents moisture from building up during cleaning.
Wear rubber gloves to protect your hands and use a face mask, especially if you are sensitive to mold or have allergies. If the ceiling is directly above furniture or personal belongings, move them away or cover them with plastic sheeting or old towels to protect them from drips.
Avoid using fans that blow directly across the mold, as they may spread spores throughout the room.
Step 2: Fill the Spray Bottle
Pour undiluted white vinegar into a clean spray bottle.
Do not mix the vinegar with water. Full-strength vinegar works better against light surface mold than diluted vinegar. It is also important not to mix vinegar with bleach or other household cleaning chemicals, as dangerous gases can be produced.
Shake the bottle gently before use if it has been sitting for a while.
Step 3: Saturate the Mold
Spray the mold generously until every visible area is damp.
Apply enough vinegar to soak the mold completely without allowing excessive dripping. Be sure to cover the edges of the affected area, as mold often extends slightly beyond the visible discoloration.
Take your time to ensure all spots receive an even coating.
Step 4: Allow the Vinegar to Work
Leave the vinegar on the surface for approximately one hour.
During this time, avoid touching or wiping the ceiling. The vinegar needs sufficient contact time to help loosen surface mold and reduce mold growth.
Patience during this stage improves the effectiveness of the cleaning process.
Step 5: Gently Scrub the Surface
After waiting one hour, use a soft sponge or microfiber cloth to gently clean the ceiling.
Work using small circular motions without pressing too hard. Excessive scrubbing may damage painted ceilings or textured finishes.
If certain areas remain stained, use a soft-bristle brush with light pressure. Continue spraying small amounts of vinegar as needed while cleaning.
Avoid using abrasive scrubbers or steel wool, as they can scratch the paint.
Step 6: Wipe Away the Residue
Dampen a clean microfiber cloth with fresh water.
Carefully wipe the ceiling to remove loosened mold particles and any remaining vinegar residue.
Rinse the cloth frequently in clean water to avoid spreading dirt back onto the ceiling.
Continue wiping until the surface appears clean.
