Place the milk in a saucepan and add the sugar.
Cook over low heat, stirring until the sugar is completely dissolved.
Add the butter and continue cooking until the mixture thickens (about 30–40 minutes), stirring frequently.
Once it has a syrupy texture, remove from heat.
Add vanilla if desired.
Pour into a glass jar and let cool.
Serving and storage tips:
Serve it as a topping for ice cream, waffles, or pancakes.
It is also ideal as a sweetener for coffee.
Store in the refrigerator for up to 1 week in an airtight container.
Variations:
Lactose-free: use plant-based milk (such as almond milk) and coconut sugar.
Creamier texture: add a pinch of baking soda.
Less sweet version: reduce 1/4 cup of sugar.
