The rule you absolutely need to know
To avoid errors, a rule called order of operations (or BODMAS / PEMDAS depending on the country) is used.
It defines the order in which to perform the calculations:
Parentheses
Orders (powers)
Multiplication and division (from left to right)
Addition and subtraction (from left to right)
In other words, we don’t calculate everything in order… but according to a precise logic.
Let’s solve it together, step by step.
Let’s now apply this rule to our equation:
We begin with multiplication and division:
3 × 3 = 9
3 ÷ 3 = 1
The equation therefore becomes:
9 − 1 + 3
We finish with addition and subtraction:
9 − 1 = 8
8 + 3 = 11
Final result: 11
