The Military Diet: Rapid Weight Loss in Just 3 Days

The military diet is a short-term, low-calorie eating plan that has become popular among people looking for rapid changes in their weight. It typically combines a strict three-day meal plan with four days of less restrictive eating.

Although people may see a noticeable change on the scale after three days, much of a very rapid decrease can come from changes in water and stored carbohydrates rather than from body fat alone. There is also no strong evidence that the diet itself has special fat-burning properties.

What Is the Military Diet?
The program generally involves following a prescribed meal plan for three consecutive days, followed by four days in which the person is expected to eat more normally. Because the three-day menu can be quite restrictive, it should not be treated as a long-term eating pattern.

The diet is mainly based on portion control and a low calorie intake. Claims that specific combinations of foods “stimulate fat burning” or preserve muscle automatically should be treated with caution.

Goal of the Military Diet
The commonly advertised goal is to lose around 3 kg (6–7 pounds) in three days. However, such a rapid change should not be interpreted as 3 kg of body fat being lost. Short-term changes in body weight can be influenced substantially by water balance, glycogen stores, and the amount of food in the digestive system.

For sustainable weight management, a more moderate calorie deficit combined with a balanced diet and regular physical activity is generally more practical than attempting to achieve dramatic changes over only a few days.

Example Military Diet Menu: 3 Days
Day 1
Breakfast:

1/2 grapefruit

1 slice of wholemeal bread

2 tablespoons peanut butter

1 cup of coffee or tea without added sugar or milk

Lunch:

1/2 cup canned tuna in water

1 slice of wholemeal bread

1 cup of coffee or tea without added sugar or milk

Dinner:

85 g cooked chicken

1 cup green beans

1/2 banana

1 small apple

The second day keeps the portions tightly controlled while changing the food choices, but the same caution about very low calorie intake still applies.
