My 4-year-old daughter refused to have her hair cut, screaming, \u2018When my dad comes back, he won\u2019t recognize me\u2019\u2014but my husband passed away several years ago.
\nI recently took my 4-year-old daughter, Olivia, to get a trim.
\nShe had beautiful brown curls that reached almost to her waist, but every morning it was a battle. Combing her hair was difficult because Olivia cried every time and said it hurt. Her curls really did get tangled.
\nAt first, everything was fine.
\nShe was sitting in the chair, wearing a cape and holding her stuffed rabbit. Then the hairdresser, Clara, picked up the scissors.
\nOlivia screamed, jumped out of the chair, covered her hair with both hands, and burst into tears.
\nMy cheeks burned. I had always taken Olivia to Clara, and before, everything had been fine.
\nI hugged her and told her it was just a haircut.
\nBut then she looked at me through her tears and She screamed,
\n\u201cNo! Mommy, please, no! I don\u2019t want a haircut!\u201d
\nThe whole room fell silent. I picked her up and carried her to the car to go home.
\nWhen we arrived, she ran straight to her room to play with her dolls.
\nI went in, sat beside her, and asked gently,
\n\u201cSweetie, why don\u2019t you want a haircut?\u201d
\nShe looked down and whispered,
\n\u201cBecause when Daddy comes to see me next time, he might not recognize me.\u201d
\nI could barely breathe. My husband, DIED, died when Olivia was only 1 year old. It was an accident, and Olivia knows that.
\nMy heart was pounding.
\nBut I had to find out the truth, so I continued,
\n\u201cSweetie, why do you think Daddy will come to see you?\u201d
\nShe shrugged and said,
\n\u201cWell, Mommy, because sometimes he comes to see me, and we play together.\u201d And if I cut my hair, when he comes to find me, he won’t recognize me.\u201d
\nI could barely hold back the tears, but I had to say:
\n\u201cBut Dad died\u2026 I\u2019m so sorry to tell you this\u2026 you have to remember\u2026\u201d
