I was horrified when I realized what it was.
One morning, like any other, while going out to water my flowers, I made a rather surprising discovery in my garden. In the middle of the flowerbed, a strange, red, slimy, and foul-smelling shape seemed to be emerging from the ground. At first, I thought it was an animal, or even something dangerous. But the truth was both more reassuring… and just as fascinating.

A disturbing discovery in the garden
Imagine the scene: I’m walking peacefully in my garden, coffee in hand, when I spot a sort of reddish, shiny mass with tentacle-like shapes. What’s more, there’s a very strong and unpleasant smell coming from it.
That’s exactly what happened to me. My first reaction was fear and confusion. I thought I’d discovered a giant larva or some strange animal. Intrigued and a little worried, I decided to do some research to understand what it was.

And the answer surprised me.

It wasn’t an animal, but a very unusual fungus.

The mysterious “creature” was actually a fungus called Anthurus archeri, more commonly known as devil’s fingers. The name alone is intimidating, and its appearance only adds to the effect.

This fungus originates from Australia and Tasmania, but it has gradually spread to several regions of the world. Today, it can be found in Europe, particularly in damp and wooded areas.

What makes it so impressive is its shape: it resembles red fingers or small tentacles emerging from the ground, often covered in a viscous substance.

Why does this mushroom smell so bad?

This mushroom has a surprising characteristic: it gives off a very strong odor, often compared to the smell of rotting matter. But this is neither a coincidence nor a problem.

In reality, this smell attracts flies, which play a very important role: they carry the spores of the fungus elsewhere, allowing it to reproduce and spread.

So it’s a very effective natural strategy, even if for us, the smell is really unpleasant.

A mushroom that grows like an egg

Another fascinating detail: at first, this mushroom doesn’t look anything like what I imagined. It starts out as a small white “egg” resting on the ground. Then, over time, this egg opens and the famous red shapes appear and unfold.

The transformation is quite spectacular, which explains why I felt like something very strange appeared almost overnight in my garden.

Is it dangerous?
The good news is that this fungus is generally not dangerous. It’s simply best to avoid touching it with bare hands, as some people may experience skin irritation. It’s best to leave it alone or handle it with gloves if necessary.

In most cases, it disappears on its own after a while.

Although it may look frightening, it’s simply part of biodiversity and the natural cycle of organic matter decomposition. It’s a striking example of a strange garden fungus that I’ve observed in Europe.

Nature sometimes holds surprises for us.
This story reminded me of something important: nature is full of surprises, and sometimes what seems worrying at first glance is actually something completely natural.

We only know a small part of the plants, fungi and species that surround us, and sometimes all it takes is a look in your garden to discover something amazing.

The next time I see something strange in nature, I won’t immediately panic: it may simply be a natural curiosity that few people have the chance to observe.

In the garden, I found a slimy, reddish creature that gave off a strong, nauseating odor.
